04/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – As announced in EUROPE 12032, the language question was raised on Monday 4 June in a backdrop to the Justice Council during a Commission information briefing on the progress achieved in setting up the European Public Prosecutor's office. According to the information we have received, the Council's legal service has explained that article 14 of the regulation introducing enhanced cooperation on the European Public Prosecutor’s Office which sets out procedures for appointing the head of the body and explicitly mentioning candidacy assessment criteria, does not set out any particular language skills required. Therefore, according to this legal analysis, a vacancy for this post that sets out particular linguistic criteria, for example, speaking English, would be illegal. France particularly spoke out on this issue to support this analysis and emphasise that this issue was crucial if they were to have different candidate profiles. (MF)
