31/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 31 May, the US Secretary Trade Secretary, Wilbur Ross, said that he was very “concerned” by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which he believes could undermine both transatlantic cooperation between businesses, and public well-being. In the column published in the Financial Times, Mr Ross highlighted the significant cost of the new rules to US businesses and criticises as “too vague” the guidelines provided by the EU on how to comply with them and which could disrupt cooperation in the financial regulatory arena, as well as in trade relations and medical research. Speaking on Twitter on Thursday, the director of the BEUC, Monique Goyens, provided the following response- “All these corporate outcries about GDPR, repeated by US politicians, remind me of car industry crying wolf because mandatory safety belts would kick them out of business. Get over it and innovate!”. (MF)
