As part of the follow-up of the African Union-European Union summit in Abidjan that was dedicated to youth, the EU announced, on Wednesday 23 May, the provision of €400 million to finance regional and continental projects that will benefit young people.
These projects notably target the promotion of institutional capacity-building for the African Union Commission and the facilitation of mobility for young people at the level of the continent – for example, by strengthening exchange programmes between African universities and by improving the recognition of qualifications and the harmonisation of higher education in Africa, the European Commission stated.
This progress is to be credited to the outcome of the ninth meeting of the European Commission and African Union Commission in Brussels. The memorandum of understanding on peace and security that was signed (see EUROPE 12025) and the launch of a joint experts' group to strengthen cooperation in the field of agriculture (see other article) are amongst the results obtained.
