EU condemns attacks against Christian churches in Surabaya

14/05/2018 (Agence Europe)On Sunday 13 May, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) condemned the bomb attacks against Christian churches in the Indonesian city of Surabaya. These attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State organisation and are said to have killed at least 14 people and left around 10 people injured. In a press release, the EEAS said “Attacks on communities at prayer run counter to Indonesia’s traditional culture of religious diversity and inter-religious harmony. Such a culture is a source of inspiration for many around the world, especially in times, such as now, of tension”.  The press release also said that Indonesia’s culture was a source of inspiration for many people throughout the world. According to the spokesperson, the EU will continue to cooperate closely with Indonesia in it its efforts to counter terrorism and radicalisation. Since this press release, another attack against a police station in Surabaya is said to have injured at least 10 people on 14 May. (CG)
