09/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 9 May, eight organisations (112, EDF, EUD, EDbU, EFHOH, EURO-CIU, FEPEDA, and the EDbN) representing the interests of persons with disabilities sounded the alarm about the Council of the EU’s decision to stick to its positions and exclude the emergency call reception centres from the scope of the directive on access to products and services (Accessibility Act). In a press release, the organisations exclaim “We have the right to call for help!” and point out that 52 million people (the deaf, hard of hearing and blind) will not be able to access adapted emergency call services. The organisations are calling on the Council to revise its position as adopted last December (see EUROPE 11921) and develop a position based on that put forward by the European Parliament (see EUROPE 11862).
