European University Association condemns renewed attacks on universities and George Soros

17/04/2018 (Agence Europe)In a press release on Tuesday 17 April, the European University Association (EUA) condemned "the recent intimidation of academics in the Hungarian media".  The pro-governmental magazine Figyelo listed the names of over 200 people, describing them as mercenaries of George Soros, the Hungarian-American philanthropist, who founded the Central European University (CEU) – which is a member of the EUA.  The list includes current and former members of CEU staff, as well as the employees of NGOs supported financially by Soros.  "This is a direct attack on academic freedom, a fundamental principle of higher education that we as Europeans must share and protect", said Lesley Wilson, EUA Secretary General.  "We cannot allow university staff to teach and conduct research in an atmosphere of intimidation and oppression from political groups or governments", she added.  (SP)
