17/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 17 April, the European Parliament adopted a non-legislative resolution drafted by Agnieszka Kozłowska-Rajewicz MEP (EPP, Poland) on the emancipation of women and girls with the assistance of the digital sector. The text was adopted by a show of hands and calls on the Commission to rectify the serious gender disparity in the Information and communications technology sector (ICT). It encourages the member states to introduce ICT education in the early stages of school and for the Commission to reserve a place for this question in its strategy for a single digital market. Currently, in Europe, almost 8 million people are working in the ICT sector but only 16% of them are women. Moreover, according to the Commission equal participation of women in this sector would lead to an increase of around €9 billion in GDP in the EU every year. (SPj)
