17/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 17 April, MEPs adopted a non-legislative resolution on gender equality in the media sector within the European Union. The text was drafted by Michaela Šojdrová (EPP, Czech Republic) and calls on the member states to fully implement existing legislation on gender equality and to encourage inspection bodies to monitor the participation of women in the media sector, which currently employs more than 1 million people in the EU. It was adopted by 523 votes in favour to 97 against with 56 abstentions and calls for an end to pay inequality. In 2015, women accounted for 68% of media graduates in the EU but the percentage of women employed in the sector was only around 40%. Similarly, less than one expert or commentator out of five in the media is a woman. (SPj)
