27/03/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 26 March, the European Commissioner for Justice, Věra Jourová, said on Twitter that she regretted the fast track adoption by the US last Friday of the CLOUD Act on access to extra-territorial data (see EUROPE 11988) and the so-called Omnibus law on federal spending. The Commissioner said that, “This narrows the room for the potential compatible solution between EU-US”. During a trip to Washington last week, Commissioner Jourová informed the US authorities that the EU wanted derogations to the provisions in text, which only authorises the conclusion of bilateral agreements with foreign governments and for the conclusion of an agreement with the EU as a whole (see EUROPE 11978). She concluded, “Shared challenges require shared solutions. I invite the US Department of Justice to sit together with our experts and look together at the best way of ensuring a sustainable solution”. (MF)
