On Tuesday 20 March, the German Social Democrat, Udo Bullmann, won the election to the presidency of the S&D group at the European Parliament, beating Kathleen Van Brempt by a small majority (81 votes for, 61 against).
Addressing the press on Wednesday, Mr Bullmann stated, “My role is to bring a progressive voice from Germany on European matters”. This message is different to the one delivered by Wolfgang Schäuble when the latter was the Finance Minister.
