European leaders want to affirm commitment for free but fair trade and to be united in face of Washington

In a moment of strong trade tension with Donald Trump's USA, which is preparing to impose customs duties unilaterally on imports of steel and aluminium, the EU heads of state and government are expected to affirm their commitment to free and fair trade at the European Council on 22-23 March, and to show unity in a firm, but proportionate, response to Washington, in the hope of avoiding a trade war.
