14/03/2018 (Agence Europe) – The Brussels Capital government still finds it hard to swallow the decision taken on 12 December 2017 to renew the licence for glyphosate in the EU for a further five years. On 8 March the Brussels government initiated action against the European Commission before the Court of Justice of the EU for failure to respect the precautionary principle, Belgian media report. In so doing, the regional government responds to the call launched by two S&D MEPs, Marc Tarabella of Belgium and Eric Andrieu of France, to their respective countries (see EUROPE 11922). It remains to be determined whether referral by a regional government is admissible by the Court, which can only receive referral from States. Another legal action had been introduced earlier by the Greens/EFA at the European Parliament for non-transparency in the authorisation procedure (see EUROPE 11800). (AN)
