14/03/2018 (Agence Europe) – In a press release dated Tuesday 13 March, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) expressed its support for setting up the European Labour Authority (ELA), following the European Commission proposal that day (see EUROPE 11980) and in this connection recognises the "effort" made by the Commission. The ETF, however, is critical about the action this potential future authority could take insofar as the proposal does not contain any provisions for the ELA to undertake any autonomous controls. Frank Moreels, the president of the trade union organisation stated: “we reject the idea that the ELA can only coordinate investigations by member states, not intervene independently when employers are breaching EU rules”.
