Monday 12 March

  • Brussels. Council of the EU. Eurogroup. – Greece: Eurogroup to note that Greece has properly carried out the two remaining prior actions for the third assessment of its adjustment programme. – Preparations for eurozone summit in March. – Preparations for international meetings, such as the IMF summit on changes in inflation and exchange rates.
  • Brussels. Council of the EU. Competitiveness Council (also 13/03). – European Semester: debate on digitising the economy. – Industrial policy: drawing up conclusions on a strategy for the future of industrial policy in the EU. – Single Market: on the 25th anniversary of the Single Market, the ministers will hold a public debate on possible improvements and intensification. – Services: as part of the competitiveness check-up, the ministers will examine costs due to undue restrictions on the services market- Consumers: examining an initiative by the Commission to revise consumer protection legislation. – Plastics: informal presentation by the Commission of its new strategy for recycling plastic. – Intellectual property: adoption of conclusions on Commission’s communication on implementation of intellectual property rights.

Plenary session (until 15/03). *Debates: - Commission’s integrity policy (appointment of Secretary General) (Commission). – Gender equality in EU trade deals (Forenza – INTA ; Björk – FEMM). – Fighting violence against women and ratification of the Istanbul Convention by EU member states (Commission). – Cross-border parcel delivery services (Anderson – TRAN). – Initial qualification and training of drivers and driving licences (Lundgren – TRAN). – European strategy on smart, cooperative transport systems (Ujhelyi – TRAN). – Regions lagging behind in the EU (Giuffrida – REGI). Committee work (until 15/03). – PEST : first meeting of new special committee on pesticide authorisations. – LIBE : structured dialogue with the first vice-president of the Commission, Frans Timmermans, on implementing the Commission’s programme in 2017 and priorities for 2018. - AFET : meeting with the Council of Europe’s secretary general on cooperation between the two institutions and the situation in Ukraine, the Balkans and Turkey. – ENVI : voting on new headquarters for the European Medicines Agency. – INTA- FEMM : discussion about non-legislative report on gender equality in trade agreements signed by the EU ahead of a vote in plenary.

Economic and Financial Affairs Council. – Banking Union: reaching agreement on a range of measures to reduce risk in banking. – Fiscal transparency: reaching agreement on a proposal to improve transparency in fiscal planning mechanisms (transparency for intermediaries). – European Semester: debate on surveillance process for policies and macroeconomic imbalances in certain member states. – G20 : Preparations for G20 meeting in Buenos Aires on 19-20/03
