Commission preparing a strategy for artificial intelligence

The European Commission is laying down a basis for a strategy on artificial intelligence and on Friday 9 March it launched an appeal for candidates to set up a group of experts.  The European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies, an independent advisory body set up by President Juncker, also published a declaration identifying a number of ethical principles that need to be taken into account.

Following the conclusions of the European Summit on 19 October 2017, the European Commission will unveil, by April 2018, an action plan to kick off the debate into artificial intelligence and controversial issues relating to liability (see EUROPE 11931)

The group of experts for which applications are requested and can be sent in until 9 April, will aim to draw up by the end of the year draft guidelines for development and use of artificial intelligence. It will also have the job of advising the Commission on the grouping of stakeholders in a ‘European Alliance for Artificial Intelligence.’

It will rely on the ethnical priorities identified by the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies, including on autonomy, human dignity and equality. [The declaration can be found at http://bit.ly/2Ftztog ] (Original version in French by Sophie Petitjean)
