02/03/2018 (Agence Europe) – Following phone conversations on Thursday 1 March with Venezuela's Foreign Affairs Minister Jorge Arreaza, and president of the national assembly, Omar Barboza, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini reiterated that it was "of the utmost importance" for the EU that the Venezuelan government set up sufficient guarantees to enable the presidential elections scheduled for 20 May to be "free, transparent and credible". The political opposition should be involved "in a united manner" for this objective to be achieved, she added, although the postponement of the elections has been agreed between the government and part of the opposition not including the Mesa de la Unidad Democrátrica.
