20/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 20 February, the Commission approved the prolongation of a British financial compensation measure in favour of Post Office Ltd (POL). This guarantees POL financial support of around €418 million for the period 2018-2021 in exchange for the provision of postal services over a large part of the territory of the United Kingdom, which would not be possible if POL's activities followed a purely economic logic. Taking the view that these services equate to a service of general economic interest (SGEI), the Commission previously approved the measure in 2012 and 2015, under the 2012 SGEI Framework. With this decision of 20 February, POL will receive only partial compensation and will be subjected to an ex-post control mechanism. The institution also notes that the decision will apply until the UK leaves the EU. (LT)
