High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has appointed Renate Weber MEP (ALDE, Romania) as chief observer of the EU election observation mission for the Paraguayan general elections on 22 April.
The EU mission will be deployed at the invitation of the Paraguayan authorities and is the second (the first being in 2013) for which Weber is chief observer (see EUROPE 10809 and 10832). A follow up mission was also deployed in 2015.
The mission's core team will comprise eight analysts, who will arrive in Asunción on 13 March. The team will stay in the country until the completion of the electoral process, and will prepare a final report. The core team will be joined shortly after its arrival by 24 long-term observers who will be deployed across the country. A further 34 short-term observers will be deployed on 17 April.
