British MPs says small businesses are not ready for Brexit

More than half of British MPs (51%) consider that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are not ready for Brexit, according to a study published on Tuesday 13 February by two organisations representing the British accountancy industry, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The study shows that just 3% of the MPs completely agreed with the statement that SMEs are properly prepared for the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU in 2019.

As we progress towards Brexit, it's good to see that the majority of MPs acknowledge SMEs will need more support and guidance”, said the chief executive of ACCA, Helen Brand.

The study lists MPs' opinions on a broad range of questions concerning British SMEs, such as exports, accounting issues and the availability of assistance and advice.

For instance, 73% of MPs believe businesses, in particular start-ups, need more free and independent information and advice. Furthermore, 88% feel that SMEs must increase their exports if the UK is to reach its full potential. 58% also agree that the time and money taken up by the fiscal system have serious repercussions on the ability of SMEs to invest and create jobs.  (Original version in French by Marion Fontana)
