During his first visit to Brussels on Wednesday 14 February, Moldova's Foreign Affairs Minister Tudor Ulianovschi underlined that the Moldovan government was fully engaged in implementing the EU association agreement.
"I underlined to Commissioner Hahn the importance the Moldovan government attaches to the implementation process of the association agreement, with particular focus on key areas such as reform of the justice sector, media development and the business climate", he said at the end of a meeting with European Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn. Ulianovschi especially highlighted judicial reform, saying he had informed Hahn about the first stages of the set up and implementation of a new concept of judicial reform, with the objective of achieving results in the immediate future.
"We need to be proactive on the implementation side to show results as early as possible, showing we are going in the right direction with the right steps, and trying to show concrete actions and deliver concrete results", he said.
Hahn meanwhile highlighted the electoral code, asking for a real investigation to be conducted into the banking fraud of 2014, which led to the disappearance of €927 million from Moldovan banks. He also highlighted the new concept of judicial reform "as this is very important for people to regain trust in the independence of the judiciary".
Ulianovschi said that February and March would be two important months for relations between the EU and Moldova – with a discussion at the EU Foreign Affairs Council, an informal meeting of The Friends of Moldova foreign ministers, and also the EU-Moldova Association Council.
