12/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – The UK Brexit minister, David Davis, said on Friday evening 9 February that he was surprised at the comments made earlier in the day by EU negotiator Michel Barnier on the United Kingdom’s position on the transition period, which London had made clear (see EUROPE 11958). Barnier said he could not understand some of the demands. According to Davis, “there is a fundamental contradiction in the approach the Commission is taking. Today they acknowledged that a way to resolve disputes and infringements is needed. Yet at the same time they dismissed the UK’s push for reasonable safeguards to ensure our interests are protected”. On Monday 12 February, no new round of negotiations had been set. UK Prime Minister Theresa May is due to deliver a series of speeches on Brexit in the coming days. (SP)
