In a common resolution on the executions in Egypt, from the EPP, ECR, Greens/EFA, EFDD, ALDE, S&D and GUE/NGL groups on Thursday 8 April, MEPs urged the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to ensure that, “human rights are not sacrificed on the altar of managing migration flows or the fight against terrorism" in the partnership priorities with Egypt.
Parliament added that the EU should fully apply its export control regime, “particularly on goods that are likely to be used to inflict torture or impose capital punishment". It also points out that, “Irrespective of security problems, executions should not be used as a means of fighting terrorism”.
MEPs are calling on Egypt to honour its commitments to genuine political reform and the promotion of democracy, fundamental freedoms and human rights, in compliance with its Constitution and international standards. All acts of violence perpetrated against political opponents, demonstrators, journalists, civil society activists and minorities should cease, Parliament adds, which also calls for, “the immediate and unconditional release of everyone detained for having peacefully exercised their right to freedom of expression, association and assembly, in addition to the holding of an independent and transparent inquiry into all human rights violations".
