17/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European regulation on effort sharing in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from sectors not covered by the EU’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) came a step closer to adoption in Brussels on Wednesday 17 January. Member state ambassadors to the EU gave their support to the last-minute provisional agreement reached between the Estonian Presidency and the European Parliament on 21 December of last year (see EUROPE 11931 and 11927). The target for the transport, buildings, agriculture and waste sectors is a 30% reduction in emissions for the period from 2021 to 2030, compared with 2005. In a press release, Bulgarian Environment Minister Neno Dimov expressed his gratitude to the Estonian Presidency for its work on this text that is crucial if the EU is to implement the Paris Agreement and stated that the Bulgarian Presidency would “work … to achieve a maximum level of progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions”.
