12/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 12 January, the European Parliament French Socialist delegation denounced a further attack against the right to abortion in Poland. Polish parliamentarians are currently examining two citizens’ initiative legislative proposals. The first bans abortion in the event of a malformed foetus, which would restrict abortion to just two cases: when there is risk to the life or health of the mother, and when the pregnancy is the result of incest or rape. The latter, which has far less chance of being passed, aims to liberalise voluntary interruption of pregnancy. “We are not surprised: each year, the ultra-conservative government proposes a restriction on the right to abortion”, the S&D French delegation said, welcoming the triggering of Article 7 of the Treaty of the EU by the Commission while voicing doubts as to the firmness of the new Bulgarian Council presidency.
