12/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 11 January, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) called for the ceasefire between the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) and Colombian government to be extended. The ceasefire expired the same day. "This opportunity for peace must not be squandered. We expect the ELN to cease its attacks immediately and encourage the parties to resume dialogue, so that a peace agreement is soon reached, which brings not only a permanent bilateral ceasefire, but also security and stability to all Colombians", the EEAS spokesperson said, stating that the desire for the continued suspension of military action has been unanimous throughout Colombia and that a only a ceasefire will enable the humanitarian situation of communities affected by the conflict to be improved.
