05/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – A spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in the evening of Thursday 4 January that death penalty sentences for crimes committed by people aged under 18 run counter to Iran’s international obligations under the International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Earlier in the day, Amirhossein Pourjafar, who was condemned to death in 2017 for murder and rape committed when he was under the age of 18, was executed. The EEAS spokesperson stated that the EU opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and in all cases without exception, and was working for its universal abolition. (CG)
