05/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 5 January, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, began a European tour to present the competent ministers with RescEU, the reinforced European civil protection mechanism, proposed by the Commission to come to the aid of countries whose capacity to deal with a disaster is insufficient (see EUROPE 11911). On Friday, the Commission was in Luxembourg to meet Home Affairs Minister Dan Kersh. Stylianides will continue his tour in the Netherlands on Monday 8 January, when he will meet Justice and Security Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus, before meeting Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon. By proposing to create a reserve of civil protection resources, the Commission hopes to improve the EU's collective response to disaster, in full respect of subsidiarity. (AN)
