13/12/2017 (Agence Europe) – On 13 December, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE) published details of several ways of tackling fake news and misinformation. The seven-page document highlights the debate in large print from the very first pages and states, “as a starting point, the liberals do not consider strict regulation as a solution and are opposed to any form of censorship”. The group is more in favour of self-regulation and is encouraging platforms to provide more transparency and independent oversight of efforts to tackle the proliferation of fake news on their platforms, in an effort to assess their effectiveness. The group also highlights education and media literacy as an essential tool. It is also demanding better and more balanced regulation in an effort to restrict the scope, use and life-time of personal data online, without necessarily hampering businesses (SPj)
