11/12/2017 (Agence Europe) – Although the campaign for elections to the House of Representatives and the seven new Provincial Assemblies in Nepal was marked by a series of violent attacks, "the elections nonetheless took place in a largely peaceful atmosphere", the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) stated on Saturday 9 December. "In spite of a number of shortcomings, political freedoms were well respected and the people of Nepal were able to participate in the democratic process", the EEAS spokesperson added, saying that these elections, which were observed by an EU mission, represent "a landmark for the implementation of the Constitution promulgated in 2015 and a step towards completing the establishment of a federal structure". The EU is committed to supporting the country in its democratic development and the conclusion of this transitional period, the EEAS spokesperson stated. (CG)
