11/12/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 11 December, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, and the European Commissioner for Justice, Vera Jourova, condemned the arson attack targeting the synagogue in Gothenburg, Sweden, and outbursts that occurred in several cities during protests against the decision of the American President to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel (see EUROPE 11920). “There is no place for anti-Semitism in Europe, and in the joint battle against anti-Semitism we should all work together to rid us of this ideology of hatred”, they state in a press release, calling upon the authorities to bring those responsible for these actions to justice. In Malmö on Friday, protesters chanted slogans calling for violence against the Jewish community and on the same day, outbursts were also noted in Berlin, where Israeli flags were burnt. (MF)
