28/11/2017 (Agence Europe) – A further step was taken in Brussels on Tuesday 28 November towards formal adoption of legislation that seeks to reform the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) for the period from 2021 to 2030 to make it more effective and implement the Paris climate agreement. Following the recommendations of its rapporteur, UK MEP Julie Girling (ECR), Parliament’s environment committee voted by a substantial majority (57 votes to 3, with 2 abstentions) to endorse the provisional inter-institutional agreement on the reform reached on 9 November, designed to strengthen the ETS while at the same time maintaining the competitiveness of European industry (see EUROPE 11910). Parliament’s plenary session vote is scheduled for February 2018. (AN)
