Toivo Klaar appointed EU Special Representative

13/11/2017 (Agence Europe)On Monday 11 November, the Foreign Affairs Council appointed Estonian diplomat Toivo Klaar as European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia.  Currently head of the Central Asian division of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and former head of the EU surveillance mission in Georgia, Klaar will take over from German national Herbert Salber, who has been in the post since 8 July 2014.  The Special Representative’s job is to work towards a peaceful settlement to conflicts in the region – the crisis in Georgia and the conflict in Upper Karabakh – and encourage regional cooperation.  The Special Representative co-chairs and attends on behalf of the EU international talks in Geneva on the consequences of the 2008 conflict in Georgia.
