On Monday 9 October, the EU Council adopted a decision on the conclusion of the agreement between the EU and Chile on trade in organic products, which was concluded in April 2016.
The new rules on trade in organic products between the EU and Chile will be based on the principle of mutual recognition by both parties of the equivalence of their respective rules and control systems on organic production.
This agreement aims to boost bilateral trade in organic products, to ensure a high level of respect for the rules on organic production by each of the two parties, and to obtain reciprocal protection of organic labels.
The agreement also provides for a system of cooperation, information exchange and dispute settlement in organic trade.
This agreement furthermore aims to improve the protection of the parties' respective organic logos and to strengthen regulatory cooperation between the EU and Chile on issues linked to organic production.
It will be applicable to EU organic products such as non-processed plant products, live animals or non-processed animal products (including honey), aquaculture and seaweed products, processed agricultural products for human food (including wine) and animal feed, material for vegetative propagation and seeds for crops.
The EU will furthermore recognise as equivalent non-processed plant products, honey, processed agricultural products for food (including wine), material for vegetative propagation and seeds from Chile.
The agreement will enter into force three months after the final notification of completion of the necessary domestic procedures for each of the two parties. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
