On Monday 9 October, the European Commission announced that with winter approaching, Serbia is to receive another €4 million from the EU to address the humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees and migrants on its territory.
The decision to grant this aid, which is financed by ECHO (the Commission's humanitarian aid and civil protection department), comes as European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides is making his fourth visit to the country. In mid-September, Serbia was still hosting over 4,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
This aid "will address the needs of the most vulnerable population especially during the upcoming winter season", Stylianides said, as reported by a press release. It will finance the distribution of food in reception centres, the protection of people and access to education for children.
With over €80 million disbursed since 2015 to help Serbia address the flows of migrants and refugees, the EU is the largest donor of emergency humanitarian aid in this country. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
