20/09/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 20 September, the EU expressed in solidarity with Mexico, which is again in mourning following a powerful earthquake that hit the country on Tuesday. The EU has also offered its support if it is requested to do so: the EU civil protection mechanism has already been activated. In a joint press release, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Christos Stylianides, stated, “Our heartfelt condolences and thoughts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones… We are in touch with the Mexican authorities and stand ready to help”. The President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Junker, has written a letter to President Peña Nieto. The Emergency Response Coordinating Centre (ERCC) is active day and night, every day of the week and is monitoring the situation closely. (AN)
