ECB considers whether confidentiality requirements were respected in resolution of Banco Popular

25/08/2017 (Agence Europe)Green/EFA members of the European Parliament Ernest Urtasun of Spain and Sven Giegold of Germany submitted a written question to the Single Banking Supervision Committee of the ECB on Thursday 24 August, asking it to take position on whether confidentiality requirements were breached in the process of the resolution of the Spanish bank Banco Popular.  At the heart of the matter lie suspicions expressed by the deputy governor of the Spanish Central Bank, Javier Alonso, who considers that the bank may actually - before it declared that it was short of liquidity - have disposed of more securities in order to claim additional liquidity from the central bank. This matter echoes complaints made by several shareholders of the bank regarding certain statements made upstream of the bailout plan (see EUROPE 11844). The Committee has a period of five weeks to respond. (MF)
