28/07/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 28 July, the European Commission suggested introducing a reference to the European Union Youth Orchestra in the ' Creative Europe' Regulation to allow the initiative to become a permanent fixture. Founded in 1976, the EU Youth Orchestra enables fifty or so young European musicians, recruited from all the member states, to play together in concerts around the world. It has been subsidised since it was set up but was threatened with extinction in 2016 until the Commission found a stop-gap solution (see EUROPE 11565). The new proposal amends the regulation setting up a programme of support for culture and creation, Creative Europe, to recognise the orchestra as an organisation authorised to receive financial support and not rely on the results of calls for tender.
