EU condemns attack on United Kingdom

On Tuesday, 23 May European leaders condemned the terrorist attack claimed by the Islamic State terrorist group. On Monday evening, at least 22 people died in the attack in Manchester (United Kingdom) during a concert by Ariana Grande. The police have indicated that, unfortunately, children were also among the victims. The police also explained that this was a suicide attack and the perpetrator of the attack died immediately after having activated the home-made bomb he was wearing. The President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Junker stated “I am greatly saddened and deeply shocked by the brutal attack in Manchester. It breaks my heart that, once again, terrorism has sought to instil fear where there should be joy, to sow division where young people and families should be coming together in celebration.” He also expressed his “sincere condolences” to Prime Minister May and the British people and said that, “today, we shed tears with you. Tomorrow, we will work with you to fight against those seeking to destroy our way of life”.

The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, also said that “Our thoughts are with the victims” in a Twitter message, similarly to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, from Italy, who stated, “Fear won't prevail. European youth will continue to enjoy their love for life, freedom and joy, together”.

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, provided assurances that Germany was standing side-by-side with United Kingdom, “This suspected terrorist attack will only strengthen our resolve to continue to work together with our British friends against those who plan and carry out such inhumane deeds," she said. "I assure the people of Britain: Germany stands at your side”.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, pointed out that they would, “carry out the struggle against terrorism together”.

Despite Brexit, the United Kingdom is planning to continue its cooperation with the EU in the field of security and the fight against terrorism. The country also wants to maintain privileged access to Europol, even if it leaves the European agency.  (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
