Greens in Parliament back 'Stop glyphosate' citizens' initiative

09/02/2017 (Agence Europe)The European Citizens’ Initiative "Stop glyphosate", officially launched by European NGOs on 8 February to call on the EU to ban glyphosate (see EUROPE 11721 and 11700), has won the support of the Greens, the group announced in the European Parliament. “European environmentalists are working hard to ensure it is successful”, said Michèle Rivasi (France). She hopes that “the Commission will be made to see sense by European citizens”. The goal is to gather one million signatures in at least seven different EU member states. “This campaign bolsters us in our opposition to the Commission and the governments of the member states. Only pressure from the public will prevent blindly extending authorisation of this dangerous herbicide”, argued her German colleague Martin Häusling. For the moment, the glyphosate licence in the EU has been extended until the end of 2017 at the latest (see EUROPE 11583). (AN)
