EU criticises killing of six Red Cross employees

08/02/2017 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 8 February, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides criticised the killing of six employees from the International Committee of the Red Cross in the north of Afghanistan (Jowzjan province).  The NGO had confirmed several hours earlier that six of its employees had been killed and that two others were reported missing.  The circumstances of this incident, as well as the identity of the victims, were still unknown as EUROPE went to press.  This is a “grave violation of international humanitarian law”, Stylianides stated.  In his view, “today's incident not only highlights the dangers facing humanitarian workers in Afghanistan but also underscores the bravery of all those that continue to work selflessly for the benefit of others”.  (JK)
