01/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 1 February, in response to the Commission’s presentation that day on the second state of the union progress report on the Energy Union project, the environmental NGO, Greenpeace, criticised the EU’s insufficient energy plans for meeting the climate change challenge and lack of respect for their commitments made under the international climate agreement concluded in Paris in 2015. In an effort to keep climate warming below 1.5°C, Greenpeace is calling on the EU to speed up its sustainable move to 100 per cent renewable energy, to scrap subsidies for fossil fuels and nuclear power and to get rid of coal plants. Greenpeace is also calling for smart and efficient energy consumption and for people to be given control of their own energy consumption and production. (EH)
