On Tuesday 31 January, the European Union called on Iran not to stir the EU's distrust of it after Iran reportedly fired a mid-range missile.
"The EU reiterates its concern about the Iranian missile programme and urges Iran to refrain from any action likely to deepen distrust, like ballistic missile tests", a spokesperson for the European External Action Service, Nabila Massrali, told media.
Massrali said the EU expected Iran to fulfil all its international obligations, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231. She stated that the missile tests were not a violation of the joint action plan on the Iranian nuclear programme. "The test is incompatible with Security Council Resolution 2231, but it is up to the Security Council to determine if it constitutes a violation" of this resolution, Massrali added.
At the request of the USA, the United Nations Security Council was due to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday 31 January, to discuss the firing of this missile. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
