Single digital market strategy review according to Andrus Ansip

The College of Commissioners is expected to examine the revision of the single digital market strategy on 1 February. To this end, Vice President Andrus Ansip published a note in which he underlined the importance of going much further in the field of cyber security and online health.

The European Commission is preparing to revise its single digital market strategy, two years after its adoption. Writing on his blog, the Vice President explained that this would involve examining what worked and what still needed to be done. He indicated that there are “two specific areas where we think that more could be done: cybersecurity and healthcare”. He also explained his point of view on the issue of cyber-attacks and the fact that Europe should be more united in responding to these new challenges. He pointed out that ways of tackling cyber criminality varied from one country to another and with most attacks occurring and Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland and said that this, “makes us all vulnerable to cross-border and cross-sector cyber threats. So, during 2017, we will examine ways to strengthen the EU's overall capacity, cooperation and resilience in dealing with cyber-attacks. We will also review the role of the EU's agency for network and information security (ENISA), to make sure it can respond to rapidly changing cyber challenges”. On the issue of online health, he also said that Europe could do more and apply data more practically in this connection.

According to the information we have received, the review is planned for May 2017 and is also expected to tackle subjects such as platforms, hate speech, data and robotisation. (Original version in French by Sophie Petitjean)
