NEWS BRIEFS / Iceland

Icelanders may vote on EU accession

04/01/2017 (Agence Europe)Although Iceland suspended its EU accession process in 2013 (see EUROPE 10920), the idea of a referendum on the country joining the EU has resurfaced, according to the leader of the Bright Future Party, one of the parties that might be included in the future coalition government. Iceland's EU membership will reportedly be one of the subjects in the negotiations for forming this government, following the elections on 29 October. According to news reports, the three parties expected to take office (two in favour of the EU and a Eurosceptic party) will include a referendum on the EU as part of their government programme. The majority opinion is opposed to joining the EU but the Icelandic people criticise the fact that the accession process was suspended without a referendum on the question taking place.  (CG)
