On 1 January, the European Union welcomed the agreement reached on 31 December 2016 by Congolese political forces, through the mediation of Catholic bishops, to put an end to violence caused by Joseph Kabila remaining in power beyond 19 December, when his second constitutional mandate at the helm of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) came to an end(see EUROPE 11687).
