Parliament approves EU-Norway agreement on fishing in Skagerrak

15/12/2016 (Agence Europe)The European Parliament gave its approval on Wednesday 14 December to the agreement between the EU and Norway on reciprocal access of vessels flying the flags of Denmark, Norway and Sweden to fish in the Skagerrak (see EUROPE 11579). This maintains the exclusive access enjoyed by the vessels of these three countries to the respective waters of the three states beyond the four nautical mile baselines. It guarantees reciprocal access for the two EU member states and Norway to the respective waters of the other parties in the Skagerrak and Kattegat while ensuring that suitable measures are taken for fisheries management and conservation in these waters. It also allows the adoption of control measures in accordance with the principles of normal jurisdiction of the coastal state, as is already the case for fishing in the North Sea. (LC)
