02/12/2016 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Friday 2 December that it had approved the applications of new further products for inclusion in the register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). The first is “Burrata di Andria”, a cow’s milk cheese of rounded shape made in the Puglia region of Italy. The Commission also granted PGI status to the “Vale of Evesham asparagus”, a green asparagus grown in the districts of Malvern Hills, Wychavon and Stratford-upon-Avon in the Vale of Evesham in England. Evesham is the only urban centre in the United Kingdom to have asparagus fields and the importance of this vegetable for the region is such that an annual festival is devoted to it. These two names will join the more than 1,370 products already protected across the EU. (LC)
