The annual inflation rates of the European Union and of the eurozone stood at 0.5% in October, up compared to September (+0.4%), according to figures published by the statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat) on Thursday 17 November.
In October, negative annual rates were observed in six member states: Bulgaria and Cyprus (-1.0% each), Ireland (-0.4%), Croatia and Slovakia (-0.3%) and Italy (-0.1%). Inflation was low in Spain and France (0.5%) and Greece (0.6%) and moderate in Germany (0.7%) and the United Kingdom (0.9%). The highest annual rates were recorded in Belgium (1.9%) and Austria (1.4%). Compared to September 2016, annual inflation was down in six member states, unchanged in one and up in the other twenty-one.
The largest upward impacts to eurozone annual inflation came from restaurants & cafés (+0.7%) and rents and tobacco (+0.04%). Gas (-0.12%), vegetables (-0.06%) and milk, cheese and eggs (-0.05%) had the largest downward impacts. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
