15/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – At the Agriculture Council on Monday 14 November, Greece raised the issue of the use of some geographical designations which have no connection with the origin or provenance of the agricultural products or foodstuffs (for example, Greek-style yoghurt made in the Czech Republic). Greece focused on the possible misuse of such geographical designations to the detriment of both consumers and producers. It also called on the Commission to develop an appropriate framework which would include objective criteria and guidelines for the “case by case examination” of those geographical designations that do not state origin or provenance. Cyprus supported the Greek request. Croatia and Belgium backed a case by case approach, while Portugal said that all unfair competition had to be avoided. Italy emphasised the differentiation of geographical indications and brands. The Commission argued that the legislation already in place allows effective case by case action. (LC)
