11/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – In the view of the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the election of Donald Trump to the White House may turn transatlantic relations on their head, not simply because the American billionaire does not appear to share European values, but also due to his apparent ignorance of how Europe and the rest of the world works. We will have to “teach the President-elect what Europe is made up of and explain the principles of how Europe functions”, whilst also bearing in mind the fact that “we will lose two years while Mr Trump goes round a world he doesn’t yet know”, Juncker said on Friday 11 November, in answer to some questions from students in Luxembourg (our translation throughout). What will make the task at hand even harder is the fact that "”in general, Americans have little or no interest in Europe”, he went on to observe. (JK)
